Economic Impact of the Nonprofit Arts Industry in Illinois

With the generous support from the Sara Lee Foundation and additional support provided by the Polk Bros. Foundation and the City of Chicago, Department of Cultural Affairs, the Illinois Arts Alliance Foundation commissioned the research, which was conducted by Convention Sports & Leisure International.

STUDY HIGHLIGHTS

Nonprofit arts are a $2 billion industry in the State of Illinois.

  • The nonprofit arts industry in Illinois has doubled from $1 billion in 1996 to $1.96 billion in 2002
  • The annual growth rate of the nonprofit arts industry over the past seven years is approximately 12 percent

Between 1996 and 2002, the nonprofit arts industry contributed $10.2 billion to the Illinois economy, of which $4.6 billion was generated in personal earnings

  • In 2001, the nonprofit arts industry supported 33,400 individuals, an increase of 64 percent since 1996
  • Nonprofit arts contributed more than $888 million in personal income to the Illinois economy in 2001
  • Since 1996, the nonprofit arts industry has contributed approximately $8.8 billion to the Chicago economy, of which $4 billion was generated in personal earnings

Visitors attending arts activities across the state have contributed nearly $5 billion to the state’s economy over the past seven years

  • Approximately 3.2 to 3.7 million non-residents visit Illinois and attend arts activities on an annual basis

METHODOLOGY

“Economic Impact of the Nonprofit Arts Industry in Illinois” study was conducted by Conventions, Sports and Leisure, International. The methodology for this study replicates a 1995 study released by the Illinois Arts Alliance Foundation and provided consistent comparisons across the time span of 1996 – 2002. The study uses data from the Illinois Arts Council, the Illinois Tourism Network, Museums in the Park and the League of Chicago Theaters.
