What if there aren't any appropriate matches for me in your applicant pool? What if there aren't any appropriate matches for me in your applicant pool? We'll do our best to find you a match who fits your needs as stated in your application. However, we can't guarantee that your ideal match will have found their way to our program yet. If we're unable to find an appropriate match for you, you are encouraged to apply again next year when we hope to have a larger pool to work from.
Yes - by filling out your application thoroughly and honestly, you'll be telling us the type of person you want to be matched with. Once applications have been accepted and matches made, each member of a suggested pair will be asked to formally accept the match before it is finalized. It is important to remember that we don't always learn the most from people who are exactly like us. Sometimes, the most knowledge can be gained from someone we might consider our opposite.
While we hope every match we make results in a state of pure mentoring bliss, we realize that sometimes the chemistry just isn't there. The option to ask for a no-fault separation from your mentoring partner always exists. As stated above, it is important to remember that we often have the most to learn from people who are our opposites - whether in personal style, educational background or another arena. We would encourage pairs to consider this and to discuss their reasons for wanting to end the partnership with each other in a constructive manner and to work toward a resolution together; IAA staff is available to facilitate this process if necessary. If a mentoring pair decides to end their relationship before the end of the program period, we may attempt to re-match both partners if the separation occurs within the early stages of the program and if appropriate matches are available.
